Life Event (Qualifying Life Event, QLE)

A major personal change — job loss, marriage, birth, move — that creates eligibility for a Special Enrollment Period.

Also known as: QLE · Qualifying Life Event · SEP Trigger

Full Definition

A qualifying life event (QLE) or "life event" is any change in personal circumstance that triggers a Special Enrollment Period. Common QLEs include: loss of health coverage (involuntary job loss, aging off parent's plan, end of COBRA, loss of Medicaid), household changes (marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, death of policyholder), residence changes (permanent move to a new coverage area, move from abroad), income changes (ACA — change in estimated income crossing subsidy thresholds), and citizenship/tribal changes. Documentation requirements vary by trigger. Life-event-driven lead generation is a year-round counterweight to seasonal OEP spikes and has grown significantly since 2023 Medicaid Unwinding began generating ~15–20 million coverage-loss events.

Example

A consumer's employer coverage ends July 31. They are QLE-eligible for a 60-day ACA SEP and a 63-day mid-year switch. An agent's ACA lead vendor flags this record with "employer-coverage-loss" metadata, allowing prioritized outreach.
